According to our friends at Transworld Business, the newest Burton catalog contains a personal addition this year…a letter from Jake Burton pledging his renewed support of specialty snow retailers. Many of you know all too well the often rocky relationship between Burton and specialty retailers over the past couple of years as Burton increased minimum buys, went direct to consumer, opened up retail shops near long supporting specialty retailers, etc. The letter acknowledges these actions and Burton’s expanded distribution but also announces several new Burton initiatives “including offering online ordering and marketing tools, a direct dealer locator URL, and including shop addresses in its catalogs.”

Transworld Business reported back in June that California’s State Congress passed two bills requiring riders under 18 to wear helmets on the slopes while skiing or snowboarding . The category has already been doing well for specialty retailers with SIA reporting that high profile injuries helped boast helmet sales to 1.2 million units this year…without the helmet law. It’ll be interesting to see what next season brings. California boasts more snowsports participants and more snowboarders than any other state.

Parents of children caught without helmets will be fined $25 and resorts are required to post signage and information about the law. Part of the House version of the bill also has a stipulation requiring resorts to report on the number of deaths that occur each year. Neither bill has passed both chambers of Congress and has therefore not been signed into law as of today.

As you all know, ActionWatch reports the highlights from the surf and skate specialty retail market monthly in Transworld Business. This month, ActionWatch is reporting that hardgoods and accessories sales are up in May, due in large part to wakeboards and protective gear – not necessarily decks or surfboards. Apparel sales were down for the same reporting time period. It isn’t time to throw caution to the wind for specialty action sport retailers quite yet but ActionWatch was pleased to report positive sales increases in the majority of product classes they track including apparel, accessories, hardgoods and wetsuits for the month of March. The only exception was footwear, which declined in sales minus sub-category sandals, which showed marked improvement. In case you haven’t seen the post on the Transworld Business Forum (http://business.transworld.net/35856/features/friday-free-for-all-core-shops-vs-ccs/) or didn’t get the email directly from BRA Board Member, Todd Canipe of Vertical Urge in Raleigh, North Carolina, last week a “recruiter from CCS/Champs/Foot Locker” came into his shop and park with fliers encouraging his local shop kids to apply for employment at the new CCS store opening at a nearby mall. Todd has been aware of the new store opening for 6 months but was caught off guard by the blatant recruitment in his shop and park. Todd wants to share his experience as a reminder to other specialty retailers to be smart and prepared, as a CCS store is likely to be coming to you.

Mike Lewis of Transworld Business reports that February snowboard sales are up, naturally inventory levels have dropped, retailers are moving in-season product and the Midwest retail region moved into the black…sounds like great news for snow specialty retailers that have had a hard past couple of years.

Our friend Kailee Bradstreet at Transworld Business wrote an article on Sanuk’s recent partnership with Clarinova’s Front Window, a software that allows Sanuk to sell product online through search engine optimized retail microsites. These microsites display the latest product images and promotions while guiding shoppers to their local retail store’s mini website. The benefit for retailers, especially those that don’t have a strong web presence is that the software will drive traffic to a site that consumers may not have otherwise found. Potential sounds great. Thanks to Sanuk for their support of specialty retail and for being an early adopter of a new technology that helps keep the specialty retail channel alive and healthy.
Interesting side note in the article is that 90% of retail transactions take place in brick-and-mortar shops.

In case you missed the coverage on Shop Eat Surf and Transworld Business, Foot Locker has announced their continuing expansion into the skate shoe world by opening 10 new CCS stores in 2010. This is in addition to the two test stores they already have in Santa Monica, California and Garden State Plaza, New Jersey. At the same time, parent company Foot Locker continues to struggle financially and will close a number of other under-performing stores bearing the Foot Locker namesake.

Agenda plans to bring on approximately 40 snow related brands to tradeshow January 2011 show in Southern California. Similar to the additions of Primer and The Berrics Agenda, the snow specific exhibitor space will be set off as its own section of the show, and will be a group of small, core brands with a focus on outerwear, boots, hardgoods, and goggles.
“It’s definitely a needed category for Agenda and with the move of SIA to Denver, it’s become inconvenient for a lot of the West Coast Retailers to go further than Las Vegas. A lot of the same buyers who buy for apparel and footwear buy for snow, and they are already coming to our show. So it seemed like the next step to add this segment,” says Agenda Co-Founder Aaron Levant.
