WILMINGTON, NC, APRIL 29, 2011 — The Board Retailers Association (BRA) presented the 4th annual Skateboarding Summit, held by International Association of Skateboard Companies (IASC) in Orange, CA. The event hosted some of the most crucial members of the skateboarding community, including manufacturers, distributors, key retailers, skate park owners and members of the core media.
The title of the Summit was “Innovate or Die”—themed not just to focus on innovating products, but the way the skateboarding industry does business from manufacturer to retailer to park owners and event sponsors.
Topics were addressed by dynamic speakers and panels of key players in the industry. Greg Koch, founder of Stone Brewing Company, delivered a brilliant keynote speech and a morning sample to the crowd to kick off the Summit. Then Don Brown, IASC Chairman talked about the State of Skate. Panels that followed over the two days included “The Future of Skateparks”, “Managing a Pro Career”, “New Media” and “The Distribution Dilemma”, in addition to Manufacturer and Retailer panels.
A popular discussion was on sustainability– recycling old products not just for restructuring but for re-distribution to encourage new participation, especially for the underprivileged. Another productive conversation continued between retailers and manufacturers as the groups forge ahead in planning action plans to move the entire industry together as a whole.
Attendees unwound with a night of bowling after Day One. But Day Two of the Summit ended the two-day event appropriately at Vans Skatepark, with a special members-only discussion on “The State of Trade Shows”. It appropriately wound down with a bonding session over some skateboarding.
Special thanks to event sponsors Moss Adams LLP, Super Heat, Wells Fargo and Stone Brewing Company, and to Steve Van Doren and Vans Skatepark for opening the doors for a great skate session had by all in attendance. Stay tuned for information about the 2012 Skateboarding Summit.
