Preliminary SIA Snow Sport RetailTRAK™ data report that all snow sport retail sales increased 13% over March 2009, pushing the entire 2009/2010 season up 4% over 2008/2009.
In March, nearly every major category in all three retail channels had double digit gains. Total online snow sport sales leapt 18% with chains growing 13% for the month. Regionally, persistent frigid temps pushed March Southern specialty store sales up 22% while returning snow helped Western specialty sales increase 16%.
As a whole, specialty store sales increased 11% in March and 4% for the season. More significantly, specialty retailers cleaned out the back rooms and regained much of their profitability. At the end of March, retailers had 15% fewer equipment and 18% fewer apparel inventory units still on-hand. Smaller inventories meant that March carryover or clearance dollar sales plunged 29%, retail prices bounced up 10% and retail margins surged a profit boosting 14%. Helmets, one of this season’s hottest categories, finished the season with a record 1.2 million units sold, a 23% increase.
