ShopperTrak, which monitors customer traffic, reports that retail sales could fall by 4% and foot traffic by 16.4% in the first quarter of 2009. ShopperTrak expects continued economic pressure, rising unemployment, increasing foreclosures and an uncertain credit market to impact consumer spending. Furthermore, a shift in the 2009 calendar moves the Easter holiday from March to mid-April, placing the holiday’s annual sales boost into the second quarter, versus the first quarter last year.
