Billabong Buys Up More Retailers, In Australia

Billabong announced the purchase of 38 retail locations operating under the names Surf Dive ‘n’ Ski (SDS) and Jetty Surf, along with two already licensed Billabong stores. Derek O’Neill, Billabong CEO, said that SDS was one of Billabong’s first accounts decades ago and that the intent of the purchase is to preserve the “core boardsport retail doors [while] ensuring a route to market for the Group’s strong portfolio of brands” implying that the stores will remain multi-branded. O’Neill goes on to say that “direct retail operations greatly enhance Billabong’s visibility into the buying trends of the end consumer and assist in the speedy development and delivery of on-trend product.” In these times of fast-fashion in the junior’s market, and competition for dollars with stores like H&M and Forever 21, its no surprise that this is a Billabong goal. Including the recent acquisition of the 38 stores in Australia, Billabong’s  retail portfolio will comprise approximately 558 doors. For more information visit...

Damn Am at 3rd Lair Moves Forward as Scheduled Despite Lack of Headline Sponsor

I came across an interesting post from Rob at Skatepark of Tampa regarding the upcoming, and well-known, Damn Am Skate Contest taking place at 3rd Lair in about two weeks. Interestingly enough, there is no headline sponsor for the event and 3rd Lair and Skatepark of Tampa (SPOT) will front the bills themselves to keep the long-standing event tradition alive. We all know how expensive these type of contests can cost and while I don’t claim to know why none of the skate companies are sponsoring this event, it is pretty shocking that no one stepped up to the plate and pretty commendable that a retailer and skate park owner will take over the financial responsibility. I should mention for the sake of being fair, that Rob does thank a couple of companies that provided prizes and “other support” including Transworld, Red Bull, Zumiez, Arnette, Independent, Mob, Dean Guitars and Bones. The Damn Am contest has previously been sponsored by DC and...
